In 2002 I began writing a Piano Trio for a university workshop. It was a very last-minute decision (the deadline was, I think, only a week away) and I'm not sure if I ever expected to complete the piece. As I never throw anything away, I filed the 200 or so bars of hastily composed bits-and-bobs away in case I ever decided to do some major editing and salvage something from the work I had done.
When I was contacted two weeks before the 2003 Barossa Music Festival and told that the Spring Academy concert of the Zephyr Quartet would now feature only three of the four members - a string trio, who had no music to perform, I dusted off my sketches, resurrected the bits I deemed useful and interesting, and literally threw this piece together.
Many years later, Ulterior Motives has had quite a few performances thanks to the resourcefulness and advocacy of friends who discovered it in my back-back catalogue.
