The Dawning of a New Day completes the triptych of works commissioned by St Mary's College to commemorate their 150th anniversary. It is a work intended for grand forces - full orchestra, generous percussion and mass choir.
The opening theme, presented by a solo violinist, is the well known traditional Irish tune "The Dawning of The Day". The evocative opening gives way to a percussive and rhythmic orchestral interlude, inviting the choir to join singing Gloria In Excelsis Deo - Glory to God in the Highest. These two themes are finally brought together to close the work, in a beautiful and heartfelt hymn of thanks and celebration of what has been and what is yet to come.
