She Speaks is a celebration of women composers throughout the ages- women of the past and present who write music in spite of the challenges, and in spite of what Virgina Woolf calls “the world’s notorious indifference”. There are names we recognise from history but whom we may not be able to hum a tune; pioneers who taught, inspired, and created fearlessly only to be forgotten after their death; and many composers creating amazing music today. It has been a privilege to partner with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Elder Conservatorium of Music in 2021, 2022 and 2024 to present this 'mini-festival' devoted to music work by women, as well as my co-curators Anna Goldsworthy (2022) and Belinda Gehlert (2024). Below is a summary of all the works presented over the life of the festival: you can also download the full list in excel here.
